The British Liver Trust is deeply saddened to hear about the death of Dr Thomas Starzl who pioneered liver surgery and undertook the world's first successful liver transplant.

Andrew Langford, Chief Executive of the British Liver Trust said:

"Our thoughts are with the family and friends of Dr Thomas Starzl today. Without his ground-breaking work on liver transplantation and research into anti-rejection drugs, thousands of people with liver disease would not have the hope of receiving a lifesaving transplant."
