Vaccines against hepatitis B

 Back

How is hepatitis B passed on and who is at risk?

Vaccines against hepatitis B work very well and are safe. Getting vaccinated stops children and adults from getting hepatitis B.

Hepatitis B vaccines are made from dead (inactivated) forms of the virus. You cannot get hepatitis B from being vaccinated.

You will usually have the vaccination into the muscle of your upper arm or the outside of your thigh.

In the UK vaccination against hepatitis B is available for free to:

  • Babies
  • People at high risk of hepatitis B
  • People who have just been exposed to the virus (emergency vaccination)
