I am writing to you as a constituent to ask for your help to urge the Government to deliver on its commitment to rollout non-invasive liver scans to 100 Community Diagnostic Centres.

On 30th May, Health Minister Helen Whately MP, responded to a Parliamentary Question stating “there is no national target specifically relating to the delivery of FibroScan testing for liver fibrosis through Community Diagnostic Centres in England by March 2025”.

This rollback on an initial diagnostic target previously confirmed by the Government on 7th March 2023 is hugely disappointing news for liver disease patients and their families. The North West has the highest rate of premature mortality from liver disease across England. Shockingly, over 11,000 people were admitted to hospital due to liver disease in this region in 2021/22*.

Up to 90% of liver disease is reversible if caught at an early stage. The alarming reality is that three-quarters of people diagnosed with cirrhosis in the UK are found when it is too late for effective intervention or treatment.

The Government’s dilution of its early diagnosis pledge could have a hugely detrimental impact. Alarmingly, liver disease deaths are 4 times higher in our most deprived communities and hospital admissions due to liver disease have increased by 47% in the last decade alone. Your support is urgently needed to help turn the tide on this public health crisis.
