Trustee - HR Specialism - British Liver Trust

About us

The British Liver Trust is the UK’s leading liver health charity, dedicated to raising awareness, supporting people affected by liver disease and liver cancer, and influencing health policy to improve prevention and early diagnosis. Our Trustees play a pivotal role in providing governance, strategic leadership and support the effective delivery of our mission.

As we approach the significant milestone this year of a full organisational rebrand, we are seeking an experienced HR specialist trustee to enhance our Board and provide strategic leadership and insight in this field through this exciting phase and beyond.

About the role

Role Purpose – as a Trustee, you will:

  • Contribute your HR expertise to support organisational development, people strategy, talent management and governance.
  • Ensure robust governance, accountability and risk management in line with charity law and good practice.
  • Support the Board in providing strategic direction, leadership and oversight of the charity.
  • Work collaboratively with fellow Trustees and the Senior Management Team.

Key Responsibilities

  • Help shape and oversee the Trust’s HR and people frameworks, including policies that support wellbeing, inclusion, performance and compliance.
  • Bring insight into current HR trends, compliance and governance standards relevant for a mission-led charity.
  • Contribute to recruitment, appraisal and development of senior staff as appropriate.
  • Attend Board meetings (currently four per year), with active participation in discussions and decisions.

Person Specification – we are looking for someone with:

  • Significant professional HR experience, ideally at senior strategic level.
  • Strong understanding of employment law, HR policy, governance and people strategy.
  • Excellent strategic thinker with collaborative leadership skills.
  • Commitment to the mission of improving liver health and supporting those affected.
  • Previous Board or Trustee experience is desirable but not essential.

Why Join Us?

  • Influence and shape the future direction of a national health charity making a real difference.
  • Use your HR expertise to enhance organisational effectiveness and impact.
  • Work alongside a passionate Board, leadership team and staff dedicated to change.

Time Commitment

  • Typically four online Board meetings per year, plus occasional sub-committee involvement or ad-hoc strategic discussions.

We are committed to improving equality, diversity, and inclusion across the organisation and to building a Board with a variety of backgrounds, skills and views, so that our leadership reflects the population at large and the communities we serve. We also welcome applications from people who have personal experience of liver disease. Please tell us if there may be any barriers to your engagement with us and we will actively work with you to remove these.

If you have the skills, knowledge and experience required, please ask for a pack from Helen at hr@britishlivertrust.org.uk. If you would like an informal chat with our Chief Executive, Pamela Healy, please email Helen with your availability so that she can arrange this.
